The combination of soft colours light and shadow in landscape oil paintings gives people a poetic feeling. The homeowner couple came across a beautiful landscape oil painting during a family trip. The painting depicts a couple under a colourful tree tunnel in brown, orange, yellow, white and peach, which looks like a family protected by the Mother Nature. The homeowner couple found in a chat that everyone in the trip noticed the oil painting as well, so they decided to bring it home to remember this unforgettable journey.

The story behind the oil painting made TRIGHT think of incorporating the imagery of oil painting into this interior design project. The designer divided and analysed different attributes of the oil painting, such as colours, shapes and curves, as well as matching them with various natural elements to form the design concept starting point.

This 900-square-foot unit is located in Sorrento. Kitchen and helper’s room are on the left of the main entrance. The hallway is equipped with spotlights, allowing people to feel like walking through the arched tunnel in the oil painting. Dining room and living room are at the end of the hallway. With the oil painting being hung in the centre of the dining room, visitors would be impressed by the source of design inspirations in the main living spaces. White, brown and grey set the colour scheme of the living room and dining room. The main wall surfaces are covered in white and grey wallpapers, while wallpaper in white marble pattern is chosen for the TV wall to create artistic ambience. The wooden floor is made up of four shades of brown, reproducing the scene of fallen leaves and shadows under the trees in the oil painting. The main lighting is specially designed with ceiling spotlights and light troughs, replacing the traditional ceiling chandelier for a feeling of spaciousness.

The hallway leads to the private areas—bedrooms and study room. Echoing the palette in the oil painting, the designer used the main colour warm maple red to match with white and wood colours in the master bedroom. The wallpaper with mountain patterns also adds a touch of nature and openness to the master bedroom. The colour schemes of the study room and kid’s room are similar to the those of the living room and dining room, while the wall of the kid’s room is decorated with space wallpaper to give playful vibe. Pairing white with brown is also featured in the en suite bathroom and guest bathroom. To make daily cleaning easier, extra large tiles are specially selected for the walls of both bathrooms in order to reduce the growth of mold between tile grouts.

The unit is particularly notable for the use of curves in various places including door frames, cabinets and kid’s bed. Aside from echoing the beauty of arched tunnel in the oil painting, there is a practical purpose for using curved lines and round corners—preventing children from being injured by bumping into sharp corners.

Sufficient storage space is a prime concern of most homeowners. In order to make good use of space and enlarge the storage capacity of the master bedroom, the designer changed the original wardrobe into a long trapezoidal cabinet. The rectangular cabinet in the middle is the main wardrobe, while the triangular cabinets on both sides are two multi-layered accessories cabinets for handbags and other clothing accessories of the homeowner’s wife. More storage space is provided under the master bed because of its hydraulic bed design. In the kid’s room, extra storage space is also available under the kid’s bed for keeping more kids’ stuff. In addition, using wardrobes and bookshelves instead of walls to separate the master bedroom, study room and kid’s room further boosts the unit’s storage capacity.

In selection of building materials, only the materials that are environmentally friendly, durable and easy to clean are specially chosen. TRIGHT has skilfully combined the couple’s joyful memories with different natural elements in this project. Together with the designer’s careful considerations, this unit has been successfully transformed into a comfortable, functional and unique design.
